FTA and The National Transit Institute (NTI) will offer a training course, Introduction to Environmental Justice (EJ), October 24-25 at the U.S. Department of Transportation headquarters in Washington, D.C. The course offers hands-on, practical pointers for staff from transit agencies, Metropolitan Planning Organizations, state Departments of Transportation, and US DOT when considering EJ in transportation planning and project development. The course, which provides the basic tenets of EJ principles through the evolution of civil rights, satisfies the requirements of Executive Order 12898, U.S. DOT Order 5610.2(a) and FTA Circular 4703.1 on environmental justice. After attending, participants will be able to:
identify the difference between Title VI and environmental justice
discuss the importance of environmental justice and how it affects transportation decision-making
discuss how environmental justice considerations are incorporated in transportation planning and project development, and
understand the compliance process for planning and implementing under NEPA.
