The U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Treasury, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development have joined forces and created an initiative called “HAMP-UP.”  If you are unemployed, and are falling behind (or at risk of falling behind) in your mortgage payments, this program may be for you.  As part of the Home Affordable Modification Program, qualifying homeowners who are unemployed may be able to suspend or reduce mortgage payments for a year or more.  The idea is the unemployed person will be able to better focus on finding a job without the stress and worry of impending foreclosure.  Check with any local jobs office that is part of the American Job Center network to learn how to apply to participate in this tremendous benefits program.  To find a local jobs office in your area, go to www.careeronestop.org.
